L.A. Care Sponsors PBS Screenings of Documentary on the History of LGBTQ+ Activism in Latino Community

In recognition of LGBTQ+ Pride Month, L.A. Care Health Plan is proud to sponsor the screening of UNIDAD: Gay & Lesbian Latino Unidos, a documentary about the first major Latino LGBTQ+ organization. Gay & Lesbian Latinos Unidos (GLLU) was founded in Southern California in 1981 at a pivotal time in the history of the LGBTQ+ equality, women’s rights, and civil rights movements. The documentary, which chronicles the events surrounding the founding, will air on PBS SoCal beginning Thursday, June 1.

L.A. Care, the largest publicly operated health plan in the country, serving nearly 2.9 million people in Los Angeles County, believes that diversity, acceptance, and inclusivity make communities healthier. As a champion of individuality, L.A. Care has been a strong supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, participating in various Pride Month activities over the years.

This sponsorship aligns with L.A. Care’s commitment to social justice and advancing health equity, which means everyone has a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible. Members of the LGBTQ+ community have faced discrimination in health care settings, which has kept some from seeking much needed care. L.A. Care believes the documentary, which shares the story of this community’s struggle for equality, will lead to greater acceptance and that could ultimately lead to improved health outcomes within the LGBTQ+ community.
