Revised Temporary Safer at Home Order — Effective December 9 to December 27, 2020

Los Angeles County is under a Temporary Targeted Safer at Home Order. This latest revised order is effective from December 9 through December 27, 2020.

To combat COVID-19 and for the sake of our health care workers, all persons must stay home. We must only go out for essential needs and for work related to essential business. The order allows for some activities like outdoor exercise, but prohibits public and private gatherings of any size, closes certain businesses and requires 100% mask-wearing and physical distancing around others outside your household. 

  1. Stay at home as much as possible. 
  2. Always wear a face covering whenever you are doing activities outside your home. 
  3. Do not get together with people not in your household.

December 9 Revised Temporary Safer at Home Order

Below are some rules of the order and examples. To see the full order and other information, please go to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LAC DPH) COVID-19 website.

What's CLOSED until further notice:

  • Lounges and nightclubs, bars and craft distilleries
  • No in-person, on-site food and beverage service allowed at breweries and wineries
  • No indoor or outdoor in-person on-site dining at all restaurants
  • Personal care services, including hair salons, nail salons and barbershops
  • Public entertainment venues: movie theaters, live performance theaters, concert venues, theme parks, and festivals
  • Family entertainment centers for all activities
  • Museums, zoos and aquariums

What's CLOSED between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.:

Lower-risk retail businesses, indoor malls and shopping centers must close for indoor retail operations between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., but may remain open for delivery and curbside pick-up.

Other restrictions to be aware of:

  • Retail businesses that can remain open: can only have indoor capacity of 20% with entrance metering and no eating or drinking in the stores
  • Standalone grocery stores: can be at 35% occupancy
  • Shopping centers: can only have indoor capacity of 20% with entrance metering and no eating or drinking in the stores, with all common areas closed
  • Outdoor playgrounds may remain open for exercise and personal health and wellness, following social distancing rules and county protocols
  • Hotels and lodging: open for critical infrastructure support only
  • Places of worship and political expression: outdoor services only

The order does not modify existing school guidance. Non-urgent medical and dental care, and childcare are allowed to remain open with appropriate infectious disease preventative measures including 100% masking and physical distancing. Read the full Safer at Home order for more details.

We understand these are difficult times, and we're in this together. Please continue to take steps to protect yourself and your loved ones. Continue to practice social or physical distancing and wear a face covering or mask whenever you are doing activities outside your home, and to wash your hands frequently.

Prevent Infection

The best way to prevent infection is to avoid being exposed to the coronavirus. Stay at home as much as possible. Practice social distancing, wear a face covering or mask in public settings, and follow the Safer at Home Order.

Also take these daily preventive actions:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. It's best to wash your hands after using the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.
  • Use hand sanitizer that has at least a 60% alcohol base if soap and water aren't available.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Isolate yourself from others as much as possible when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
