ADHD Prescriptions: Providing Follow-Up Care

April 2019

As you know, it's important for people taking attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) prescription medications to receive regular follow-up care to ensure that their prescriptions are working as they should. The suggested protocol is:

  • Once within 30 days of the first prescription
  • At least twice more in the following 9-month period

But parents of children taking these medications don't always know the protocol, and thus patients don't get the follow-up care they need.

To help close this gap in care, L.A. Care has been making calls to parents and guardians of members ages six to 12 who are taking an ADHD prescription. The purpose of the call is to educate them on the importance of prompt and regular follow-up with their child's prescribing physician, and encouraging them to make a follow-up appointment.

Between January and March, L.A. Care reached out to over 1,000 members! We hope that this has made a difference in your ability to provide quality care for your patients.
