Safety Net Clinics Play a Vital Role in the Affordable Care Act Implementation

Clinics are a key provider of quality health care services for the newly insured as well as the residually uninsured.

While much of the news about health care reform lately focuses on the Covered California™ marketplace, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) also broadens the Medi-Cal program to include all low-income adult citizens and legal permanent residents, even adults without children. More than 300,000 patients in Los Angeles County will transition from the Healthy Way LA program into Medi-Cal on January 1, 2014, and thousands more will get covered in the coming years. Yet, experts project that more than one million Los Angeles County residents will still be uninsured in 2019 once the ACA is fully implemented. Because of this, safety net clinics will remain a critical component of the health care system in Los Angeles County. As a Medi-Cal health plan, L.A. Care will continue to work with our physician partners and safety net clinics to provide the highest quality care for both our existing and new Medi-Cal patients.
