Managed Healthcare Executive Reports on L.A. Care's Role in Medical Food Programs

Managed Healthcare Executive featured L.A. Care in "Medical Foods Strive for Insurance Coverage". The piece talks about the status of medical foods in the health care industry, and the efforts to have them covered by insurance plans. While legislative proposals have not yet succeeded, pilot programs are testing the use of medically tailored meals to reduce emergency room visits and hospitalizations, improve health and ultimately save money.

L.A. Care is participating in California's pilot program, Food is Medicine, by supporting Project Angel Food's delivery of medically tailored meals to Medi-Cal patients with congestive heart failure.

Most people don’t understand what are the 'right' foods, how to cook them, and how important they are. They also have to get over the hump that medical foods don't taste good. That takes education and hand holding by dieticians, who are part of our disease management programs.
