KVEA Telemundo 52 Features L.A. Care's Elevating the Safety Net Initiative

KVEA Telemundo 52 reported (in Spanish) from L.A. Care's July 19 launch event for Elevating the Safety Net, a $31 million initiative to address the growing shortage of primary care physicians, especially in the Los Angeles County safety net. The safety net includes those facilities and practices that serve the uninsured, Medi-Cal members and other vulnerable populations.

One component of the initiative includes providing full medical school scholarships of up to $350,000 so that students can pursue careers in underserved communities without the burden of a costly education debt. The piece features this year's scholarship recipients and L.A. Care's Director of Community Benefit, Roland Palencia.

The other programs under Elevating the Safety Net include providing medical school loan repayments to physicians recruited to work in L.A. County's safety net. Another will provide grants to safety net clinics and private practices for salary subsidies, sign-on bonuses and/or relocation costs for such recruits.
