KMEX Univision 34 featured L.A. Care's new Elevating the Safety Net initiative, where the health plan committed $31 million to address the growing physician shortage that is threatening the health of residents across the state, especially in underserved communities.
The initiative is comprised of three grant programs to recruit physicians into the Los Angeles County safety net — those facilities and practices that serve the uninsured, Medi-Cal members and other vulnerable populations.
One will provide medical school loan repayments to physicians recruited to work in L.A. County's safety net. Another will provide grants to safety net clinics and private practices for salary subsidies, sign-on bonuses and/or relocation costs for such recruits. The third is a scholarship program, through which eight students this year received full medical school scholarships of up to $350,000.
