Provider Leadership Program

Thank you for your interest in L.A. Care Health Plan's Provider Leadership Program (PLP). Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until 5:00 p.m. on April 29, 2022. Program activities will start in May 2022. Please continue to visit our website for the most updated information.

Overview

L.A. Care is pleased to partner with the Center for Health Care Strategies (CHCS) to offer the Provider Leadership Program. Providers practicing in Los Angeles County community health centers will benefit from the program designed to equip participants with practical leadership and management skills necessary to effect transformational change within their health centers, and ultimately improve patient care and health outcomes.

Our goal is to enhance the capacity of providers in established and emerging leadership roles while serving communities with histories of marginalization and poverty.

Providers who are exploring a leadership role and those who are already in a leadership role are invited to apply. Individuals with backgrounds and experiences that are underrepresented in clinical leadership positions are highly encouraged to apply.

The Provider Leadership Program is offered free of charge to all participants.

Application

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until 5:00 p.m. on April 29, 2022. Please review the participant selection criteria, eligibility requirements and participant expectations before completing your application.

The program will accept up to 20 participants through a competitive application process. Multiple providers from one organization may apply, but admission for all is not guaranteed.

Participant Selection Criteria

  • Eligibility — Applicants are welcomed from any eligible clinical leaders, including but not limited to: physician associates, nurse practitioners, licensed clinical social workers, behavioral health providers, dentists, pharmacists, and physicians. Applicants must be employed by a safety net provider organization in Los Angeles County that is contracted with L.A. Care Health Plan.

  • Vision for program participation  — Applicants should articulate their leadership goals and how they hope to use the program to achieve them. Applicants should reflect on the practical leadership and management skills they feel are necessary to effect transformational change within their health centers and ultimately improve equitable patient care and health outcomes.

  • Vision for leadership project — Applicants will propose a leadership project as part of their application. Leadership project proposals should clearly depict an organizational or policy challenge they wish to focus on as part of the PLP and how the project can help advance the applicant's leadership development goals. Applicants should be able to define what success for this project will look like for their daily work, their organization, and the patients they serve. Projects may change after acceptance into the program but must include a strong equity focus for program consideration.

  • Support from a supervisor or organizational sponsor — Applicants require sponsorship from their supervisor or organizational sponsor who will be asked to submit a letter of support on behalf of the applicant. An organizational sponsor works with the applicant to set aside time to attend all seminars, individual coaching, group leadership project meetings, and complete related assignments.  The organizational sponsor will also provide advice and feedback on the applicant's organizational leadership project.

  • Ability to commit to PLP schedule of activities — While it is understood that urgent conflicts may arise, if accepted, applicants are expected to commit to participation in the full complement of PLP program activities.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria to be eligible for the program:

  • Serving in or exploring a clinical leadership role at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), FQHC look-alike, or not-for-profit community clinic in Los Angeles County that is contracted with L.A. Care Health Plan; and
  • Be a licensed clinician including, but not limited to, physician associate, nurse practitioner, licensed clinical social worker, behavioral health provider, pharmacist, dentist, or physician (DO/MD).
