Postpartum Depression

a mom and her newborn Hormonal changes, physical changes, and stress are contributing factors in developing postpartum depression. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in nine women experience symptoms of postpartum depression.

Symptoms of postpartum depression include feelings of sadness, guilt, worthlessness, difficulty bonding with the newborn, loss of interest, loss of concentration, decreased appetite and in some cases, weight gain or increased appetite. 

The vast majority of perinatal depression is unrecognized and untreated. Providing early screening such as the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) would assist in identifying members who need treatment and provide an opportunity to refer to services.
