Initiate the Conversation: Refilling Prescription Drugs

September 2018

A clinic or office visit is the perfect time to discuss refilling prescription drugs with your patients. Helpful tips and encouragement can keep patients on track with their medication schedule and result in improved health outcomes.

When writing prescriptions, remember a 90-day supply is available for maintenance medications. There is also a mail order option, which is especially convenient for those patients that you know have transportation issues.

Helpful Tips to Tell Your Patients

  • Call the pharmacy or go in person for a refill a few days before the medication runs out. Try to avoid getting to the last pill before calling for a refill.
  • Bring all pill bottles to clinic appointments or the pharmacy to help identify what refills are needed.
  • Bring their L.A. Care Member ID Card and their driver's license/ID card when filling prescriptions.

Specialty Pharmacies

L.A. Care has two new Specialty Pharmacies for the L.A. Care network: Lumicera Health Solutions and Kroger Specialty Pharmacy. Acaria Health Inc., will no longer fill prescriptions for L.A. Care Health Plan members.

If you have questions, please contact Navitus Customer Care at 1-844-268-9786 — they are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can also contact the L.A. Care Health Plan Provider Service Line at 1-866-522-2736 between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Formulary Updates

As a reminder, the L.A. Care Formulary, which is approved by L.A. Care's Pharmacy Quality Oversight Committee, is updated on a monthly basis. Visit L.A.
