L.A. Care Teams with Trusted Community Partners on COVID-19 Vaccination Clinics In Vaccine-Hesitant Communities

These Clinics are Part of the Health Plan’s State-Approved COVID-19 Vaccination Plan

L.A. Care Health Plan, the nation’s largest publicly operated health plan, is hosting at least a dozen new vaccine clinics starting this week, and is supporting more than a dozen others, targeting Los Angeles County communities where vaccine rates are lower than the general population. The health plan is working with schools, colleges and faith-based organizations to reach communities where vaccine hesitancy is, in part, fueling the new surge in coronavirus cases, and preventing us from gaining control over the pandemic.

The health plan is especially interested in boosting vaccination numbers among its Medi-Cal members. The vaccination rate for L.A. Care’s Medi-Cal members is currently 65.4 percent compared to the countywide rate of 88.8 percent.

Misinformation has spread like wildfire over social media platforms since the beginning of the pandemic. This has exacerbated the hesitancy challenge. L.A. Care is partnering with trusted community partners to help spread facts about the vaccine’s safety and efficacy, and ultimately it could help ease concerns and get more shots into arms.

These efforts are part of a multifaceted effort the health plan has undertaken to increase COVID-19 vaccinations in L.A. County. L.A. Care’s vaccination response plan was accepted by the state last September. While the Medi-Cal vaccination rate remains lower that the health plan would like, the rate has jumped more than 20 percent since the state accepted the plan, and the health plan hopes that this latest round of clinics will provide another boost.
