California Health Report Shares L.A. Care Blog on Maternal Mental Health

The California Health Report featured a blog by L.A. Care's medical director for behavioral health, Dr. Michael Brodsky, entitled "Too Few Docs to Treat Low-Income Mothers with Depression and Anxiety".

One in seven new mothers will experience maternal depression or anxiety. But the nationwide shortage of physicians, including mental health professionals, is making it increasingly difficult for women to get help. Dr. Brodsky argues for policy change that will address the low reimbursement rates — particularly in Medi-Cal — that deter physicians and other clinicians from entering mental health fields, as well as practicing in the safety net.

We must start thinking of maternal mental health as an up-front investment in the well-being of the entire family. When mothers feel well, they have more time and energy available to attend to others in the household and the whole family can thrive. For children, the benefits of their mothers' increased engagement and availability can last a lifetime.
