L.A. Care Launches New Product Under Health Care Reform: L.A. Care Covered

LOS ANGELES — Tomorrow, L.A. Care Health Plan, the nation’s largest publicly operated health plan, will launch its new health plan for all of Los Angeles County. L.A. Care Covered™ is a Qualified Health Plan chosen by Covered California, the state’s health benefit exchange.

L.A. Care Covered™ will provide its members access throughout Los Angeles County to an extensive network of doctors, specialists, hospitals, pharmacies, preventive care services and health education.

As part of the launch, L.A. Care is unveiling a new, product-specific website, www.lacarecovered.org. It offers a user-friendly format, with information about each health plan tier and detailed benefits, a monthly premium calculator, health care reform guides and health and wellness information.

In addition, in an effort to raise awareness of new health care coverage options, L.A. Care will soon dovetail with the Covered California outreach, education and paid media campaign to target diverse communities throughout the region with an advertising campaign. It will aim to distinguish L.A. Care Covered™ as a quality and affordable health plan that focuses exclusively on the diverse needs of Los Angeles County residents.

As a new product, L.A. Care Covered™ is in keeping with the organization’s strong commitment to national health care reform. It provides yet another vehicle to ensure that low-income individuals and families have easy access to high quality, affordable health care.

“We are excited that Obamacare is coming to Los Angeles and that we have the opportunity to serve even more members through an affordable health care coverage plan for all of Los Angeles County,” said Howard A. Kahn, Chief Executive Officer of L.A. Care. “Our participation in Covered California is a perfect complement to the services that we already provide to more than one million members in L.A. For the first time, entire families can get coverage under the same health plan. This is our mission and we are proud to continue supporting the Los Angeles safety net in an even bigger way.”

To prepare for the October 1 enrollment period, for several months the organization has been providing education and trainings about the Affordable Care Act to community-based organizations (CBOs), community clinics, key consumer groups and individuals. From nail salons and car washes, to health fairs and town halls, L.A. Care’s health promoters are reaching community members where they live, work and play.

L.A. Care has collaborated with Insure the Uninsured Project, the Community Clinic Association of Los Angeles County and the California Community Foundation to host “Obamacare 101 and the Affordable Care Act” workshops at clinics, hospitals and CBOs across Los Angeles County. More than 1,000 people have participated and additional workshops will be held in the coming months.

L.A. Care is also a partner in the “Everyone on Board!” campaign, a coalition of more than 30 community based and advocacy groups, community clinics and county agencies. The coalition aims to educate the community about health care reform and to enroll community members in health coverage programs for which they may be eligible.
