Sign-Up and Enrollment Periods

Thank you for being a loyal member. L.A. Care is committed to delivering quality affordable health care to Angelenos and proud to participate in the Covered California™ exchange. 

Each year, it's important to review your existing coverage and confirm that your current L.A. Care Covered™ or L.A. Care Covered Direct™ plan meets your needs. There are important Sign-Up, renewal and special enrollment dates you'll need to make note of in order to prevent any lapses in your coverage. Please take a look at the corresponding tab below to learn more.

Annual Renewal Period

The Annual Renewal Period for 2019 coverage will begin October 1, 2018 and end January 15, 2019. We will mail you a 2019 Renewal Notice during the beginning of the Renewal Period with important information about your plan.

The Renewal Period is a good time to report any household changes, including adding a dependent or a change in your permanent address. To ensure your coverage will continue or that any requested changes are effective on January 1, 2019, you will need to report all changes by the date on the notice.
 

L.A. Care Covered

How to Renew

You do not need to take any action if you wish to keep your current L.A. Care Covered™ plan. If Covered California™ does not hear from you by the renewal deadline, you and your dependents, if any, will be automatically renewed in the same L.A. Care Covered™ plan using your most recent household size and income information you provided. Detailed information will be in the 2019 Renewal Notice you will receive in the mail before November 1, 2019.

 

If You Have Changes to Report

  • Sign in to your Covered California™ online member account or call the Covered California™ Service Center at 1-800-300-1506 (TTY 1-888-889-4500) to update your information.
     
  • Any changes requested on or before December 15, 2018 will be effective January 1, 2019.
     
  • ​Any changes requested after December 15, 2018 and before the end of the Sign-Up period on January 15, 2019 will be effective February 1, 2019.

 

Financial Assistance

Covered California™ will automatically renew your current coverage. However, to keep your federal assistance, be sure to provide consent to have your income verified if you have not already done so.

To provide consent, sign in to your Covered California™ online member account or call the Covered California™ Service Center at 1-800-300-1506 (TTY) 1-888-889-4500The information you provide may make you eligible for a different amount of financial assistance. You may need to upload any required documents to your Covered California™ online member account.


L.A. Care Covered Direct

How to Renew?

Members with L.A Care Covered Direct™ can renew in any of the following ways:

  1. Automatic Renewal: You do not need to take action if you wish to keep your current plan. L.A. Care will automatically renew you and your dependents if any, in your current L.A. Care Covered Direct™ plan.
     
  2. Renew by Phone: Get personalized support to renew your coverage by calling L.A. Care Customer Solution Center at 1-855-270-2327 (TTY 711).

 

If You Have Changes to Report:

  • If you need to make changes to your current plan, add new dependents or change the primary subscriber, please contact the L.A. Care Customer Solution Center at 1-855-270-2327 (TTY 711) for assistance.
Sign-Up Period

The Sign-Up Period begins October 15, 2018 and ends on January 15, 2019. This is when you can apply for new coverage or make changes to your existing plan.

If you miss the Sign-Up Period and you need health coverage, you can enroll in or change your coverage during the Special Enrollment Period if you experienced a qualifying life event.  See the table below to see examples of qualifying life events.

Special Enrollment Period

Did you know that certain life events make you eligible to apply for health coverage? Special Enrollment is a period outside the Sign-Up Period when you can apply for health coverage. You may be able to apply for health coverage if you experience qualifying life events such as those listed in the table below and report them within 60 days.

Loss of health coverage
For example, you are no longer eligible for Medi-Cal, or you lose health coverage through your job.

Income changes
For example, you become newly eligible or ineligible for Covered California™ financial assistance due to a change in income.

Having a birthday
You are turning 26 years old and are no longer eligible to stay on your parents’ plan or in Medi-Cal’s Former Foster Youth program.

Change in place of residency
A permanent change of address within California or from another state. This also applies to individuals who are released from jail or prison.

Having a child or adopting a child 
Also includes receiving a child into foster care, or placing a child in adoption or in a foster home.

Becoming citizens, nationals or lawfully present individuals
This event applies only to people who were not previously citizens, nationals or lawfully present.
