Sheryl L. Spiller
Sheryl L. Spiller was appointed to serve as the department head for the Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) on July 10, 2012. As the department head she plans, organizes, and directs all operations of the department; the second largest locally operated social services agency in the country with an annual budget of 3.9 billion, over 13,600 employees and 67 facilities. DPSS administers programs that provide a vast array of services to families, children, single adults and the elderly designed to alleviate financial hardship and promote family health, personal responsibility and economic self-sufficiency. Over 3.5 million participants are served monthly and more than 115,000 applications are processed monthly.
Prior to being appointed as the department head for DPSS, Ms. Spiller served as the Acting Director for 11 months. Additionally, she served as the Chief Deputy Director for DPSS beginning in 2007, providing support to the Department Head in all aspects of DPSS’ operations. Prior to her appointment to chief deputy, Ms. Spiller served as the administrative deputy director for the Los Angeles County Child Support Services Department. She directed the preparation of the department’s annual budget of $185 million and provided administrative and management services to a budgeted staff of 2,000 which included 115 attorneys.
